Sorabji In Iowa
A short documentary about the British organist Kevin Bowyer and his lifelong obsession with the most difficult organ music ever composed. This is a film about the mystery of artistic commitment.
In 2017, Bowyer traveled from his native Glasgow to Iowa City to inaugurate the University of Iowa’s majestic new organ by performing perhaps the most complex—and most certainly the longest—organ piece in history: Kakhosru Sorabji’s 8-hour-long (!) Second Symphony for Organ Solo. Until Bowyer spent his life perfecting them, Sorabji’s three organ symphonies were considered unplayable. The concert in Iowa City marked
the first performance of Sorabji’s Second Symphony on the North American continent.
Listeners came from as far away as Seattle to hear this rare performance.
