Praise for Frautschi:

“Profound and moving!”

—Thomas Lahusen

Canada Research Chair in History, Arts and Culture
University of Toronto, Chemodan Films

“Beautiful. Frautschi the person (and the film) gets to the core of what matters in all of art, not just in music. The interweaving of interviews, the performances, and Frautschi’s own words all work to create a web of emotional understanding that elegantly prepare the viewer to finally receive his 10 types of memories. This will be an inspiration not only for musicians but for all artists.”

—Leighton Pierce

Filmmaker
University of Iowa

"A fascinating glimpse into the world of one of the great musical pedagogues of the 20th century."

—John Schneiderman

Director, Guitar & Lute Studies
University of California, Irvine

"Very nicely done! A strong statement."

—Hopkinson Smith

Lutenist
Schola Cantorum Basilensis, Switzerland

"The film by [Gölz and] Timofeyev shows, through sober and involving narrative, the figure of a great man who, on his dacha, taught the art of the guitar as a discipline that is exemplary and valid for the whole sphere of existence."

—Angelo Gilardino

Praise for Mrii pro mynule -- Dreaming Up the Past: Early Music in Ukraine
Thank you for the WONDERFUL film that I saw during the festival. I loved watching it and I thank you for making it.

It is, of course, a beautiful celebration of the music and the musicians and the traditions you witnessed and participated in, but it was even more for those who watch the film. It is an invitation to join that family or group of people.

By the end of the film I began to recognize people and to know which people and music or traditions belonged together. In the Ukraine there was an international gathering: what we saw in the film; but there was also another international gathering as we sat far away in Iowa City and were suddenly pulled into and joined to this family of musicians and music. Thank you for making me feel like I belonged – in recognizing and remembering the people whom I had “met” twenty or thirty minutes earlier. I knew who had been an early enthusiast or organizer, and of course I knew who you two liked so very much, and I felt like I belonged, too. I was in the audience at the festival, too – just sitting further away!

So, thanks for introducing me into a wonderful new world of music, but even more, into a world of people who are friends of yours and fellow musicians and inviting me to know them, too. It was a very warm and wonderful film – even when I saw people shivering and sitting in the concerts in coats and scarves. Their hearts and ears were warm with the music.

I really enjoyed your film. Thank you for making it.
